On the 22nd of October 2011, members of the Nanoscience group ran demonstrations for the public at the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) in Manchester. These included (but were not limited to):
- Liquid nitrogen demonstration including smashing flowers and bananas, shrinking balloons, and building a tiny jet engine from a ping-pong ball.
- Bubble rafts to demonstrate packing of “atoms” and foams.
- Vacuum demonstration with expanding marshmallows.
- Ferrofluids magnetic liquids which form fascinating patterns when a magnet is brought near them.
- Atomic force microscopy demonstration demonstrating the microscope’s ability to see structures smaller than the wavelength of light.
